To prevent this bankruptcy he turned heavily to the sale of indulgences -- the giving of money to the church to buy forgiveness for sins or to get a dead relative out of Purgatory etc., you know Pope Power. This pay-for-penance scheme angered many, including Martin Luther, and his was the match that lit the fuse of Protestant Reformation and tore apart the Catholic Church, a real leader of his faith.
