Great Chief of the Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux and father to his people, a War Chief who fought in the Battle of Little Bighorn.
While on reservation in the winter of 1890 news came to Sitting Bull about the Ghost Dance, this ceremony promised to rid the land of the whites and restore the Indians' way of life. Authorities feared that Sitting Bull a spiritual leader, would join the Ghost Dancers.
Lakota policemen were sent to bring him in. A gunfight broke out during the arrest and one of the Lakota policemen put a bullet through Sitting Bull's head.
