I have had a long fascination with the history of medieval Japan and a deep admiration for the artisans who created the Samurai armour and especially the helmets (kabuto) and accompanying half-mask (mempo) part of the elaborate suits of armour worn by the samurai.
My love for these works of art has led me to a series of paintings and drawings inspired by the artistic talent incorporated in the development of these beautiful and terrifying adornments of war.
These images were inspired by and not images of any existing armor that I know of.The series is split into 3 parts: Shoguns, Samurai and Ronin.
The Shoguns are all large oil paintings on a specially treated paper.
The Samurai exists as a collection of drawings of varies sizes - 6x9 (ink, pencil & acrylics, 18x24 ‘‘‘(colour pencils), and larger than 18x24.
Ronan are usually created in 2 colours, frantically drawing to represent the outlaw, outcast figures who were once proud Samurai now shunned by a public who they begged from or preyed upon for their survival.
mixed media (ink, chalk, pencil, conte crayon etc.).
