The oldest mask in existence is a stone mask from the pre-ceramic Neolithic period dating from 7000 BC so being inspired by objects that have been around since long before 7000 BC is not difficult. From our prehistoric ancestors to present day Halloween the mask has been used for rituals, ceremonies, rites, protection, disguise, performance, and entertainment.
These drawings are inspired by my love of masks, a love that started a long time ago. At first I was attracted to them as an art object but my representation of the mask took on greater significance in my art when I started taking more interest in what a mask meant to ancient cultures and what it represented. The creation of these images is a spontaneous action on my part there are no sketches no preliminary drawings or colour schemes worked out in advance. The images are created within minutes quickly sketched out in pencil and a few hours of inking and colouring. I never know at the start of one of these images what it is that I’m drawing or trying to represent I draw until what it is presents itself to me at that moment I know what I’m creating.
There is a serious side to my work and a humorous side these drawings reflect a bit of both.
I hope you the viewer enjoy them.
